What is a nut when thinking about construction, engineering, and manufacturing?

A nut is a type of mechanical fastener that is manufactured from several different materials. There are available in various sizes, shapes, with various threads to accommodate the wealth of requirements across various industries. It is almost always used in conjunction with a bolt and has a hole in the centre that carries an internal thread.

What are nuts used for?

Nuts are used in conjunction with bolts to tighten two items together. The nut is tightened along the shaft of the bolt forcing the sheets of material together. For example, two separate pieces of material have holes drilled into them. The holes are aligned, and the bolt is then placed through the holes. The nut is then screwed onto the bolt and tightened with the clamping force of the nut and bolt holding the material in place. The shaft of the bolt prevents radial movement while the head of the bolt and the nut together prevent axial movement.

What types of nuts are there?

The standard hexagonal nuts are the most common but there are many different types of nuts for use across many situations within various industries. There are several different nut types currently available here at Fusion Fixings, with the range always growing. From the small hexagonal nuts you might find in your computer to the nuts and bolts used in construction and engineering industries, the list is extensive.

What are nuts made from?

The nuts here at Fusion Fixings are manufactured from A2 / A4 stainless steel, steel with BZP – bright zinc plated, nylon, brass, and hot dip galvanised steel. All have their own properties, but the combination of these materials covers a range of requirements across many industries.
