Why are they called Coach Screws?

The clue is in the name ‘coach screws,’ as they were originally used in the construction of carriages and coaches, hence the name "coach screw". Dating back in history to the 19th century, a time when coaches anarriages were a common form of transportation across the country. They were used within the wooden frames of carriages to fasten the various parts together.

What sets Coach Screws apart from other traditional screws?

The coach screw is noticeably different to many other wood screws on the market. Coach screws carry a hex head which means unlike many other wood screws the head will be visible when installed.

Another noticeable different is the size of the coach screw when compared to many other screws. General purpose screws tend to be between 3 and 6mm in diameter, whereas coach screws can be supplied with much thicker diameters.

This ensures that he coach screw are ideal for heavier applications such as fencing, gate construction, larger decking project, and timber to timber supports, to name but a few applications.

At time of writing this, coach screws at Fusion Fixings can be bought up to M12 with increased sizes coming soon.

Why use a coach screw?

One of the key benefits of coach screws is their strength, using a combination of a strong coarse thread and a hexagonal head. The coarse thread allows for a strong tight hold, while the hexagonal head enables a secure and reliable grip for installation by a variety of standard tools.

A pro tip is that when using coach screws, it is advised to use a pilot hole. Some types of wood are prone to splitting and the pilot hole can help to reduce this.
The traditional hexagon head to the coach screws, combined with the coarse thread makes them ideal for use in heavy-duty applications, such as securing large beams or posts in construction projects.
